TOGETHER WE CAN DO SO MUCH MORE
Samantha Tubbs never thought about swimming competitively until a friend asked her to join the swim team. She was nervous because she was born with an undeveloped arm & no hand. But the 14 year old did everything else girls her age do. She gave it a try & swam very well! Her passion was evident & set a goal to be on the Nat’l Paralympic Swim team. Dad Ray, who homeschooled her since Grade 3, wanted to support her talent but money/facilities were limited. He contacted King George Y to see if existing programs could help. “Since there were no other facilities, we needed to join the Y.” Ray met with KG Y Exec Dir Elizabeth Clark; she made sure the family got a membership they could afford & introduced them to Linda Davis & Ken Novell, who found Samantha a swim coach. After months of swimming & working with a coach, she beat out the 3 time Para winner in her group in her 1st Para swim meet! She is now training for the Nat’l Para swim meet in Miami to qualify for the Emerging Olympic Para Team. “The Y is our 2nd family, without it we could not afford to support her dream & her talent would have been wasted,” Ray Tubbs. Samantha is also teaching 2nd graders to swim in the Y outreach program. “We’re amazed at all the activities/services & tremendous support the Y provides,” Tubbs family.
