Drowning can happen nearly anywhere with standing water — but as a parent or caregiver, you can’t keep your kids sidelined. By equipping kids with the tools they need to be confident in and around water, they’ll be able to reap the health benefits of exercise, bond with family and friends and take pride in their new skills — safely. YMCA swim lessons are taught by certified instructors, providing important skills that could save a life and will benefit youth and adult swimming students for a lifetime.Â
Infant and Toddler Swim Lessons
Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention and the importance of supervision. Our Infant and Toddler lessons begin by introducing infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment, then progress to water exploration which focuses on exploring body positions, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.
Preschool Swim Lessons
A low student-teacher ratio allows participants to safely develop skills and confidence in the water. Your swim instructor will assign your child’s stage based on their swim skills, and children will advance through stages as skills improve, beginning with basic self-rescue skills preformed with assistance. Lessons progress to body position and control, forward movement and directional changes in the water and continued practice on how to exit safely in the event of falling into the water. Later stages will focus on water stamina and stroke introduction.
School-Age Swim Lessons
Students learn personal water safety, achieve basic swimming competency, and progress to learn about the four competitive swimming strokes. Kids from 5 to 12 can progress through six stages of classes as they learn to swim, work to refine strokes, and advance their water skills, beginning with water acclimation, movement and stamina, and progressing through stroke introduction and stoke mechanics.Â
Teen/Adult Swim Lessons
No matter your age, water safety is important, and it’s never too late to learn a new skill. Teens and Adults may choose from different levels of classes, beginning with water safety and swimming competency, to building and refining stroke techniques. Choose from group lessons or work one-on-one with an instructor with private swim lessons.

“My oldest son was very fearful of water when he started taking YMCA swim lessons. His instructor was so patient and really took the time to help him comfortable and confident in the pool. He has really flourished and now loves to swim, and I feel better knowing that he has learned life-saving skills.”
