YMCA Bright Beginnings helps local children start the school year with confidence by providing new clothing, shoes, school supplies, and the encouragement they deserve. Through this impactful outreach program, volunteers are paired one-on-one with a child for a special shopping experience that helps ensure they are prepared and excited for the first day of school.

The day begins with a fun bus ride filled with songs, cheers, and smiles before children enjoy a healthy breakfast and meet their volunteer shopping partner. Together, they shop for essential back-to-school items including shirts, pants, shoes, socks, underwear, and a coat. Each child also receives a backpack filled with school supplies to help them succeed in the classroom.

For many volunteers, Bright Beginnings becomes an annual tradition because they experience firsthand the joy and impact of helping a child feel valued, confident, and ready to learn.

Each year, the Rappahannock Area YMCA serves more than 300 local children through the Bright Beginnings program, helping ensure every child has the opportunity to start the school year on the right foot.
